A traditional Diwali diya is made from earthen clay.
A thin piece of cotton is rolled into a wick. A bit of oil is put in the diya.
Then the wick is put in, with the tip soaked in a little of the oil so that it lights easily.
The diya is then lit and placed outside the door of the home, near a rangoli design.
