National Flag of India

The National Flag of India is known as the Tiranga (तिरंगा) as it is of 3 colours: saffron, white, and green. It symbolises freedom.

1. Designer of National Flag of India: Pingali Venkayya, a native of Andhra Pradesh.

2.  Date of adoption of National Flag of India: 22nd july, 1947 by the Constituent Assembly of India

3. Colours of the National Flag of India & what each colour represents: Deep saffron in the topmost horizontal strip; white in the middle horizontal strip; and dark green in the lowermost horizontal strip.  

Saffron = Courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation; 

White = Purity and Truth; 

Dark green = Faith and Fertility

5. Central symbol of the National Flag of India: a wheel in navy blue to indicate the Dharma Chakra or Ashok Chakra (the wheel of law). The diameter of the wheel approximates the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes. According to standard set down by ISI (Indian Standard Institution) the central wheel should occupy 75% of the space of the white horizontal strip.

6. Material of the National Flag of India: As per the official flag specifications, the National Flag of India must be made from Khadi. Khadi is a yarn spun by hand and is made up of cotton, silk and wool.
