Navratri Festival of India

The Navratri Festival of India is the festival of the Hindu community for celebrating the worship of Goddess Shakti, considered to be the Divine Mother. The word Navaratri is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning 9 nights (nava means nine and ratri means nights). Thus, the 9 nights 10 days Navratri festival is celebrated by worshiping the 9 forms of Shakti.

The Navratri Festival begins on the first day of the fortnight of the lunar month of Ashwin, when the moon is at its brightest. The last few days of the Navratri festival are the days of Durga Puja. In various cities of India, especially in the cities and towns of West Bengal, clay idols of Goddess Durga depicting her slaying the demon Mahisasura are put up in pandals and the celebrations are on a grandiose scale.

Another major aspect of the Navratri Festival is the Garba and Dandiy-Raas dance programs organised in major metros, and primarily all over Gujarat.
